The Gossips

ceramic, acrylic, 2~3.5 x 1.5 x 2.5~4", 2025

A celebration of the women that raised me and the love they show through the preparation of food, touch, exuberant laughter, and the community found in friendly gossip. Here, miniature elderly aunties sit around delivering unmissable stories in the bright and loud dress characteristic of village women. There's a timeless sense of playful girlhood that arrives in the exchange of gossip, and no place is more fit for this exchange than the kitchen: the chaos of cutlery banging on pots and rice being washed and herbs being picked in bunches for freshness. These stories become passed from one perpetual girl to the next until they become legend, much like the recipes they know by heart. And like the recipes whose exact measurements are never known outside of instinct, details of stories may be taken in creative liberty. It's the time together that matters.
